Sony’s upcoming upgrade to its PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology appears to be giving the PlayStation 5 Pro a fresh surge of interest.
Following the announcement of an improved PSSR update arriving in March, reports suggest the console has sold out at several US retailers and on PlayStation Direct. As a result, players are reconsidering the mid-generation upgrade.
Sony launched the PS5 Pro in November 2024 as a more powerful version of the standard PlayStation 5. However, the system’s biggest selling point has always been its new AI-assisted upscaling tech, PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR).
The feature is designed to render games at a lower internal resolution and upscale them to a sharper 4K output. In turn, this helps titles look more detailed without sacrificing performance.
Sony’s newly revealed update appears to significantly enhance that technology. While full technical details haven’t been shared yet, the upgrade is expected to improve image clarity and stability across compatible titles. Moreover, the first major game confirmed to support the improved PSSR is Resident Evil Requiem. This may also be helping drive renewed interest in the console.
Beyond PSSR, the PS5 Pro already offers several hardware advantages over the base PS5. Sony says the system includes a GPU that’s around 45% faster, improved ray tracing capabilities and support for Game Boost. Notably, Game Boost can enhance resolution and performance in selected PlayStation 4 titles.
There are a few caveats, though. Unlike the original PS5 models, the PS5 Pro doesn’t include a built-in disc drive. Therefore, physical game collectors will need to purchase the optional add-on separately.
Still, with the upgraded PSSR update on the way and more games beginning to support the feature, the PS5 Pro is starting to look like a far more compelling upgrade than it did at launch. This is especially true for players chasing smoother performance and sharper visuals on modern TVs.
