Millions of customers on O2 are being offered a free upgrade to 5G+. This unlocks faster speeds and improved reliability across the operator’s expanding standalone 5G network.
The upgrade is available to all O2 Pay Monthly users with a compatible device, and it doesn’t cost anything extra. Once enabled, customers can tap into O2’s 5G Standalone (5G SA) infrastructure. The company says this service is now available in more than 700 towns and cities across the UK.
For users, the biggest change should be performance. According to O2, 5G+ delivers average speeds around 50% faster than 4G, while also offering better connectivity in crowded areas such as stadiums, transport hubs and busy city centres.
Additionally, because devices no longer need to maintain simultaneous connections to both 4G and 5G networks, the upgrade can also reduce battery usage during everyday use.
Not everyone will get the upgrade automatically, though. Customers need a compatible phone and SIM, typically one purchased from 2024 onwards. Those with older SIM cards can still access 5G+ by switching to an eSIM. O2 says this can be done online at no additional cost.
Support already extends to a wide range of newer smartphones, including models from Apple, Samsung, Google and Motorola. It also covers devices from brands such as Honor, Oppo and Nothing.
The rollout forms part of a broader investment push from Virgin Media O2, which says it is spending £700 million this year to expand coverage, improve reliability and increase speeds across its mobile network.
With the upgrade now available as standard across O2 plans, the company says it’s aiming to make next-generation mobile connectivity more accessible. In particular, demand is growing for faster streaming, cloud gaming and other data-heavy mobile services.
