Apple has officially unveiled the AirPods Max 2, bringing its newer H2 chip to the company’s premium over-ear headphones for the first time.
The upgrade focuses on smarter features, improved sound quality, and more effective noise cancellation while keeping the familiar design intact.
Here’s what’s new…
A new chip
The headline change is the move to the H2 chip, which powers a noticeable boost in Active Noise Cancellation. Apple says ANC is now up to 1.5x more effective. This helps to block out consistent background noise like trains or aeroplane engines more efficiently. Transparency mode has also been refined. As a result, there is a more natural sound that makes it easier to stay aware of your surroundings.
Audio quality gets a lift too. AirPods Max 2 use a new high dynamic range amplifier for cleaner, more detailed sound. In addition, there is improved bass response and more balanced mids and highs. When used with a USB-C cable, the headphones now support 24-bit/48kHz lossless audio. Therefore, they are a more viable option for creators working across music and video.
Alongside the hardware upgrades, Apple is bringing a suite of H2-powered features that have already appeared on its newer earbuds. This includes Adaptive Audio, which automatically adjusts noise control depending on your environment. There is also Conversation Awareness, which lowers playback when you start speaking. In addition, there’s Voice Isolation for clearer calls. Finally, Live Translation, powered by Apple Intelligence, allows for real-time multilingual conversations.
Improved recording
Apple is also positioning the AirPods Max 2 as a tool for creators. New features like studio-quality audio recording and a built-in camera remote aim to make them more useful for podcasters, musicians, and content creators.
Battery life and overall comfort remain a focus, with the same over-ear design paired with updated materials, including recycled components across the build. The headphones will be available in midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue.
AirPods Max 2 price and release date
The AirPods Max 2 are available to order from March 25, with shipping starting early next month, priced at £499/$549
For existing AirPods Max users, the update is a meaningful step forward. However, for everyone else, it’s Apple finally bringing its flagship headphones in line with the rest of its H2-powered audio lineup.
