Apple is telling everyone to update their iOS urgently

Apple is urging iPhone users running older versions of iOS to update immediately. Outdated software could leave devices exposed to active hacking attempts, Apple warns.

In a new support notice, the company specifically calls out devices still on iOS 13 and iOS 14. It says these devices are vulnerable to exploit kits like “Coruna” and “DarkSword”. These tools reportedly take advantage of security flaws in older versions of iOS, allowing attackers to compromise devices through malicious websites and links.

Apple’s advice is straightforward: update your iPhone as soon as possible. Moving to a newer version, including iOS 15 and later, ensures those vulnerabilities are patched.

According to Apple, users already running updated software are protected from these specific threats. This includes newer releases up to iOS 26.

To address the issue, Apple rolled out additional iOS 15 and iOS 16 security updates on March 11. These updates targeted the same vulnerabilities. Users who haven’t updated yet may also start seeing Critical Security Update alerts prompting them to install the fix in the coming days.

The good news is that all devices capable of running iOS 13 or iOS 14 can also upgrade to iOS 15. As a result, there’s no hardware limitation stopping most users from patching their devices. That makes this less about compatibility and more about whether users have actually installed the update.

For those who can’t update for any reason, Apple suggests enabling Lockdown Mode – a more extreme security feature designed to block common attack methods like malicious web content and message attachments. It’s not aimed at everyday users, but it can offer an extra layer of protection in high-risk situations.

Safari also plays a role here. Apple’s built-in Safe Browsing feature, enabled by default, helps block known malicious domains tied to these attacks.

While there’s no indication these tools are being widely used everywhere, Apple notes they’ve already appeared in several regions globally. Furthermore, they’re particularly effective against devices running older software.
