The Switch 2 might not be as popular as many of us expected

Nintendo is reportedly scaling back production of the Switch 2 following signs of weaker-than-expected demand, suggesting that the console’s early momentum may already be slowing despite what had initially looked like a highly successful launch period.

According to a report from Yahoo, the company now plans to produce around four million units this quarter instead of the six million it had originally forecast, with the reduced production levels expected to continue into April.

The decision comes after comments from Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa, who acknowledged during a recent earnings call that overseas sales have been “somewhat weaker than expected,” pointing to softer performance in key markets such as the United States.

This marks a notable shift from the console’s debut, when the Switch 2 became Nintendo’s fastest-selling system ever after shipping 3.5 million units within its first four days, highlighting a sharp contrast between early demand and current trends.

Early enthusiasm around the Switch 2 was driven by a combination of upgraded hardware, strong first-party titles, and pent-up demand from the original Switch lifecycle, but sustaining that level of interest appears to be proving more challenging over time.

Despite this slowdown, Nintendo is still expected to meet its broader sales target of 19 million units for the current fiscal year which indicates that the company continues to see stable demand across the full launch window rather than a complete drop-off.

Alongside demand concerns, rising production costs (particularly RAM prices) are also creating pressure, with reports suggesting Nintendo may need to adjust the console’s pricing if costs continue to climb.

For now, however, the reduction in production appears to be primarily driven by weaker consumer demand rather than supply chain limitations, raising questions about whether the Switch 2 can maintain its momentum in a competitive gaming landscape.

Nintendo is reportedly keeping a close eye on market conditions, with the possibility of ramping production back up if demand improves, or if external factors such as export disruptions or new hardware variants shift the current outlook.
