iOS 26.4 includes new age verification tech for UK users

Apple has quietly introduced age verification tools for UK users in its latest iOS 26.4 update, a change that didn’t make the official feature list. However, this could have a big impact on how people access apps.

The new system is designed to comply with the UK’s Online Safety Act, which requires platforms to verify whether users are over 18 before granting access to age-restricted content. That includes certain apps on the App Store. Therefore, Apple now needs a way to confirm a user’s age directly at the OS level.

While Apple didn’t highlight the feature publicly, regulators have already welcomed it. Ofcom, the body responsible for enforcing the law, said the move is “a real win for children and families,” adding that it supports wider efforts to keep young users away from harmful content online.

In practice, the process appears relatively seamless. In some cases, Apple can automatically verify a user’s age using existing account data, such as how long the Apple ID has been active, without requiring additional steps. That approach was briefly spotted in earlier iOS 26.4 beta versions before Apple pulled it. Apple called the appearance premature. Now, it’s officially live.

The rollout reflects a broader shift in how tech companies are handling age checks. Rather than relying solely on individual apps, verification is increasingly being handled at the platform level. This makes it harder to bypass restrictions.

Apple is still allowing users to access apps as normal, but those flagged as 18+ may now require age confirmation before they’re fully available. Exactly how verification works could vary depending on the user. In addition, Apple hasn’t detailed every method it might use.
