Samsung Display has unveiled a new screen coating designed to tackle one of OLED’s biggest annoyances: reflections.
Called QuantumBlack, the new film reduces light reflectance by 20% compared to the company’s previous solution. It’s set to roll out across all new QD-OLED monitors launching in 2026.
That might sound like a small tweak, but it addresses a very real issue. While QD-OLED panels can deliver true black by turning pixels off completely, ambient light bouncing off the screen can wash out those deep blacks in bright rooms. Meanwhile, QuantumBlack is Samsung’s latest attempt to fix that, helping maintain contrast and clarity even under less-than-ideal lighting.
The benefits go beyond just picture quality. Samsung says the new film also improves durability, bumping panel hardness from 2H to 3H. In practical terms, that means better resistance to scratches from everyday use. Whether that’s cleaning the display or moving it around your desk, the improvement should be noticeable.
This focus on both performance and durability suggests Samsung is targeting gamers as much as general users. Strong black levels are especially important in darker scenes. In those moments, better contrast can make it easier to pick out details, something that could genuinely impact gameplay in genres like FPS or survival titles.
We’re already seeing partners line up to adopt the tech. Brands like ASUS, Gigabyte, and MSI are preparing QD-OLED monitors featuring their own versions of the coating. These will be marketed as Black Shield, Obsidian Shield, and Dark Armor, respectively.
The timing also lines up with a growing OLED monitor market. According to Omdia, shipments are expected to more than double by 2030. Refinements like this could help push adoption further, especially for users who’ve been put off by glare or screen fragility in the past.
