Nintendo is about to shake up how much you pay for Switch 2 games.
From May 2026, Nintendo says its first-party Switch 2-exclusive titles will carry different pricing for digital and physical versions. Boxed copies are expected to cost more. The shift starts with Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. Here, digital pre-orders sit at $59.99, while the physical version jumps to $69.99.
It’s a notable break from the long-standing approach where both formats typically cost the same. This was the case despite obvious differences in production. Nintendo says the change reflects the “different costs associated with producing and distributing each format”. However, retailers will still have flexibility to set their own prices.
In practice, it means players who prefer collecting cartridges could end up paying a premium. Or, players who like having a physical library might see the same. Meanwhile, digital buyers are effectively getting a built-in discount. This is something players have been arguing for years but rarely seen implemented this clearly.
There’s a catch, though. Going digital on Switch 2 isn’t entirely frictionless. Larger game sizes mean expanded storage, likely via microSD Express cards becomes more important. This adds a hidden cost for anyone ditching physical media entirely.
The move also raises questions about Nintendo’s newer Game-Key Cards. These act more like physical licences for digital downloads rather than traditional cartridges. It’s not yet clear whether those will follow physical or digital pricing. Nintendo hasn’t offered details.
This pricing shift lands at an interesting moment for the Switch 2. While the console improves performance, it also adds features like GameShare. Game prices have already been creeping up compared to the original Switch. Charging extra for physical copies could further divide opinion, especially among longtime Nintendo fans who still favour owning their games outright.
