Kaleidescape has unveiled a new high-end movie server aimed squarely at serious collectors, and the price tag is just as big as the storage.
The new Terra Prime 120TB can hold up to 2,000 4K films. However, it’ll set you back a hefty $34,995. That’s about £26,000.
This latest model replaces the older 96TB version and is designed for users building out large, whole-home cinema setups. It works alongside Kaleidescape’s Strato movie players (which are excellent), letting you stream high-quality films across multiple rooms while keeping everything stored locally.
The headline here is capacity, but speed is part of the pitch too. Kaleidescape says movies can be downloaded in as little as eight minutes over a 2.5G internet connection. As a result, it makes it less of a waiting game to fill that enormous library.
As with previous Kaleidescape systems, the focus is on quality over convenience. The platform offers what it calls a “high-fidelity” movie experience. This includes lossless audio formats like Dolby Atmos and DTS: X. There is also full-quality video that isn’t compressed in the same way as typical streaming services.
The Terra Prime isn’t meant to work alone, either. Users can group up to four servers together and connect multiple Strato players. In this way, you can create a scalable system that can handle huge libraries and multi-room playback. Features like cover art browsing, expanded library management and parental controls are all part of the package.
Of course, this kind of setup is far from mainstream. Beyond the near-$35K cost of the server itself, you’ll also need Kaleidescape’s ecosystem. That includes compatible players and purchased content from its movie store to actually use it.
Still, for home cinema enthusiasts who care about bitrates as much as screen size, the Terra Prime 120TB looks like Kaleidescape doubling down on its niche. It delivers a physical-media-like experience, just without the discs.
