Apple’s next major Apple Watch update looks set to follow the same playbook as its upcoming iPhone software, with AI taking centre stage.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, watchOS 27 will focus heavily on artificial intelligence features. There will also be a more routine round of performance tweaks and bug fixes.
The update is expected to be unveiled at WWDC 2026 on June 8. Apple will also introduce iOS 27 and its wider software lineup during the event.
Unlike some previous years, though, this doesn’t sound like a major overhaul for the Apple Watch experience. Gurman notes that there are no big hardware changes expected. On the software side, the story is fairly focused. Apple is adding smarter features powered by AI. Also, there is an effort to make the system run more smoothly day-to-day.
That likely means improvements that work quietly in the background rather than headline-grabbing redesigns. Think smarter notifications, better health insights, and more context-aware features. This will be especially relevant as Apple continues to build out its broader AI push across devices.
The approach also lines up with what’s expected from iOS 27, which is rumoured to double down on AI too, particularly around Siri. If that carries over, the Apple Watch could end up benefiting from the same intelligence upgrades. These would just be adapted for a smaller screen. Furthermore, the experience would be more glanceable.
If anything, watchOS 27 sounds like a consolidation year. Apple appears to be focusing less on flashy new features. Instead, it is focusing more on making the software feel faster, cleaner, and more capable behind the scenes. All of this is happening while using AI as the main driver for new functionality.
We’ll have to wait until June for the full picture. Early signs suggest this could be a quieter update on the surface. However, the changes underneath are doing more of the heavy lifting.
