Apple’s iPhone Fold edges closer to reality

Apple’s long-rumoured foldable iPhone might finally be moving beyond the concept stage.

According to fresh supply chain chatter, the device has reportedly entered early trial production at Foxconn, which is one of the clearest signs yet that Apple is getting serious about a foldable iPhone.

The report, which cites Chinese sources, suggests Apple has already shared shipment targets that point to a potential launch window in the second half of 2026. However, this doesn’t mean mass production is underway just yet, as trial production is typically used to refine manufacturing processes. Even so, this does indicate the project is progressing behind the scenes.

If the rumours are true, Apple isn’t going down the clamshell flip-phone route. Instead, the so-called iPhone Fold is expected to adopt a book-style design. This concept is similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold devices which opens up into a larger tablet-like screen rather than a compact clamshell.

Display details are still speculative, but previous leaks have pointed to a 7.7-inch folding inner display paired with a 5.3-inch outer screen. There’s also talk of Apple working on a near crease-free panel, something competitors have struggled to fully crack. Though in reality, it may end up being less visible rather than completely invisible.

Software could play just as big a role too, with reports suggesting iOS 27 may introduce foldable-specific features like improved split-screen multitasking and a more iPad-like interface when unfolded. This hints that Apple is designing the experience alongside the hardware rather than treating it as an afterthought.

None of this is official yet, and Apple hasn’t publicly acknowledged any foldable plans. But if trial production is indeed underway, the iPhone Fold may finally be shifting from years of rumours to something much more tangible. Even if it’s still a while away from landing in your pocket.
