Gadhouse jumps on the retro sound wagon with the Miko Cassette player

Marking its first cassette-based product, Gadhouse has introduced the Miko, a portable player that pairs analog cassette playback with Bluetooth connectivity in a translucent casing drawn from Japanese-inspired aesthetic references.

The Miko enters a niche but growing market for retro audio hardware, where brands have revived cassette, vinyl, and FM formats to meet consumer demand for physical media and the warmer sound character that’s associated with analog playback.

Bluetooth connectivity is what separates the Miko from purely nostalgic cassette players by allowing users to play audio wirelessly to speakers or headphones, reducing the friction that has limited cassette hardware to wired listening setups.

The lightweight form factor keeps the Miko practical for daily use, with simplified playback controls that avoid the complexity that some digital audio players carry, the Gadhouse Miko is all about the simplicity that made original cassette players so widely accessible back in their heyday.

The translucent casing is a deliberate design choice to ape the coloured plastic aesthetics of late 1980s, early 1990s consumer tech. The player’s Japanese-inspired design language also draws on visuals associated with the blueprint that Sony and Aiwa developed decades ago.

Gadhouse positions the Miko within its broader retro-tech lineup, a range that targets consumers who enjoy audio hardware as both a day-to-day device and a lifestyle object. It’s an approach that’s reflected in the player’s emphasis on visual identity that goes hand-in-hand with its playback credentials.

Over the last few years, the cassette format has benefitted from a revival that’s caused annual sales figures in both the US and UK to climb as music artists release music release new material on tape alongside digital formats. Can in continue and maintain its rise? Gadhouse will certainly hope so with the Miko.

The Gadhouse Miko Cassette Player launches worldwide today and priced at $99 / £69.99. It’s available through Gadhouse’s global retail partners, directly from the Gadhouse website, and via Amazon shortly after launch.
