GoPro is stepping well beyond action cams with its new Mission 1 lineup, a trio of compact cinema cameras that push into more serious filmmaking territory.
At the centre is the Mission 1 series’ new 50MP 1-inch sensor paired with GoPro’s GP3 processor. Together they promise better low-light performance, up to 14 stops of dynamic range, and longer runtimes than previous models.
The headline feature comes from the flagship models. These support 8K video at up to 60fps, alongside 4K at up to 240fps. There are also extreme slow motion options reaching 960fps at 1080p.
The standard Mission 1 dials things back slightly with 8K30 and 4K120. However, it still keeps the same sensor and core image pipeline. This makes it the more accessible option without losing the big upgrade in image quality.
A first for GoPro
One of the more interesting additions is the Mission 1 Pro ILS, which swaps GoPro’s fixed lens design for a Micro Four Thirds mount. This opens the door to a wide range of interchangeable lenses. That’s a big shift for GoPro, effectively turning it into a modular, mirrorless-style cinema camera. Even so, it still keeps its compact, rugged design.
Across the range, GoPro is also leaning into flexibility for creators. There’s support for Open Gate recording (up to 8K30 on higher-end models), making it easier to reframe footage for different platforms. In addition, there’s 10-bit colour, GP-Log2 and timecode sync for more serious editing workflows.
Battery life and durability are still key selling points. GoPro claims over five hours of recording at 1080p and more than three hours at 4K30. The cameras are waterproof up to 20 metres without a housing. A redesigned body adds a larger rear display and chunkier buttons for use with gloves. There is also a wide 159-degree field of view.
There’s also a full accessory push alongside the cameras, including a new wireless mic system and updated Media Mod with expanded ports. Plus, there is a range of grips, lighting options and batteries aimed at building a complete shooting setup.
The Mission 1, Mission 1 Pro and Grip Edition will be available for pre-order from May 21, with general availability starting May 28. More advanced bundles and the interchangeable lens model are set to follow later in 2026.
