Fitbit is overhauling one of its most-used features, with a redesigned Sleep Score that digs much deeper into how well you really sleep.
In a report from 9to5Google, Fitbit’s new Sleep Score is rolling out now in Public Preview and shifts the focus from a single number to a more detailed breakdown. In addition, there are clearer explanations and tips aimed at helping users improve their rest.
At the core of the redesign is transparency. Instead of just showing a single score, Fitbit now highlights exactly which metrics contribute to the overall result, making it easier to understand what’s bringing your sleep quality up or down. That includes everything from total sleep duration to how quickly you settle into proper sleep. It even includes how often you move during the night, and how many times you wake up.
It’s a more complete picture overall. Fitbit now treats your night as a single continuous sleep journey, using updated algorithms to assess everything from “sound sleep” (steady, undisturbed rest) to restlessness and interruptions. As part of this, metrics like time to sound sleep and full awakenings aim to pinpoint specific habits that might be affecting how rested you feel the next day.
That extra detail isn’t just for show. Fitbit is pairing the new data with actionable insights, especially for Premium subscribers. For example, if your data shows you’re taking too long to fall into deep sleep, the app might suggest adjusting your wind-down routine like cutting screen time or trying a breathing exercise. There’s also a built-in Coach that explains day-to-day changes, and can show how a late nap or a particularly active day might affect your score.
One thing to note: your Sleep Score may change once the update rolls out. Fitbit says the new system measures sleep differently, so results won’t map directly to previous scores. Users will see a prompt in the app to set things up. For now, the full experience is primarily handled through the mobile app rather than directly on Fitbit devices.
