Chinese e-reader brand Xteink has announced the S4, a compact Android-powered device that magnetically attaches to the back of a smartphone for around $50.
The magnetic attachment mechanism sets the S4 apart from conventional standalone e-readers like the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite, with its 6.98mm profile and 95-gram weight placing it among the slimmest and lightest reading devices currently available at any price point.
The S4’s phone-attachment design also addresses one of the more practical objections to carrying a dedicated e-reader, removing the need to manage a second device by allowing it to sit flush against a handset that most owners carry with them at all times.
That portability comes alongside a meaningful internal upgrade over earlier Xteink models, with the S4 switching from a proprietary operating system to Android 11, a shift that opens the device to a broad range of third-party reading applications including Kindle, Kobo, Libby, Moon Reader, NOOK, and FBReader.
Google Apps and Services have not been officially confirmed for the S4, meaning some applications may require sideloading, though the overall flexibility still represents a substantial step forward from the closed software environment of the X3 and X4.
On the hardware side, the S4 carries a 4.3-inch display matching the screen size of its predecessor while doubling down on battery capacity, stepping up from 650mAh on earlier models to 1,400mAh alongside 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and a USB-C port.
The S4 also introduces a front light for the first time across the Xteink range, with adjustable colour temperature that allows readers to shift the display warmth to suit ambient lighting conditions, a feature standard on mid-range and premium e-readers from Amazon and Kobo but absent from previous Xteink devices.
The Xteink S4 is currently available for pre-order in China at around $50, with an international release expected in the coming months, though no confirmed pricing or distribution channels for markets outside China have been announced just yet.
