Amazon is expanding Alexa+ beyond its own Echo devices, and Bose is first in line to benefit.
The AI-powered assistant is now rolling out across a range of Bose speakers and soundbars in the US, including existing models. It is not just supported on new hardware.
That alone is a big shift. Until now, Alexa’s more advanced features have largely relied on Amazon’s own ecosystem. Now, with Alexa+ arriving on Bose gear, Amazon is clearly pushing its assistant as a platform rather than a product and taking the fight more directly to rivals like Google and Apple.
In terms of features, Alexa+ on Bose speakers does pretty much what you’d expect from Amazon’s latest AI upgrade. It supports more natural, conversational voice commands, letting you do things like build playlists based on mood or track down songs from vague memories. You can also control smart home devices, and Alexa+ can handle tasks like booking dinner reservations or reordering essentials from Amazon.
The experience is largely hands-free, with less need to reach for your phone. This setup fits neatly with Bose’s living room and home audio focus.
But here’s the catch: Alexa+ isn’t free for everyone.
While Amazon includes it as part of a Prime membership, anyone else will need to pay $19.99 per month to access the upgraded assistant. That adds an ongoing cost to devices that were previously more of a one-time purchase, and as such, could be a sticking point for some users.
As for compatibility, Alexa+ is already live on several existing Bose products, including the Smart Soundbar lineup (300, 600, 900) and Home Speaker models. It is also available on the Portable Smart Speaker, Soundbar 500/550/700, and the Music Amplifier. The newer Lifestyle Ultra speakers, just revealed, will support it from May 15.
The move signals a broader shift in how AI assistants are being deployed. Rather than keeping features locked to its own hardware, Amazon is spreading Alexa+ across third-party devices. This change could potentially reach more users, but it also introduces a subscription model that not everyone will be keen on.
