Ultrahuman is expanding beyond smart rings and into recovery tech with a new gadget called Photon. This is a new red light therapy device designed to work alongside the company’s wearable ecosystem.
At first glance, Photon looks like another handheld red light therapy gadget in an increasingly crowded market. However, Ultrahuman’s pitch is less about the hardware itself and more about how the hardware connects with its Ring PRO and Ring AIR wearables to personalise recovery routines based on sleep and recovery data.
Photon uses dual-wavelength light therapy, combining 660nm red light and 850nm near-infrared light – two wavelengths commonly associated with skin health, muscle recovery, and general wellness. According to Ultrahuman, each of the device’s 12 LEDs emits both wavelengths simultaneously to deliver more consistent therapy sessions.
The hardware itself is relatively straightforward. It weighs around 600g, charges over USB-C, supports roughly six sessions per charge, and includes a 10-minute automatic shutoff. Ultrahuman says it is developing the device to meet FCC, CE, UKCA, and RoHS standards.
What makes Photon stand is its software layer. When paired with an Ultrahuman Ring, the device can recommend different protocols depending on recovery and sleep metrics. That includes suggesting which body area to target, how long to use the device for, and even the best time of day for a session.
Rather than treating every day the same, Ultrahuman says Photon adapts around changing recovery patterns. One day might prioritise muscle recovery after poor sleep or exercise strain, another day could shift toward wind-down routines or skin-focused sessions.
The company is also leaning heavily into accessibility on pricing. Photon starts at $249, significantly undercutting many premium red light therapy products that often land closer to the $500 to $1,000 mark. It’s also chucking in the Photon Protocols PowerPlug at no extra cost for Ring users.
Of course, there’s still a wider question around how much of red light therapy’s claimed benefits translate into meaningful day-to-day improvements for average users, despite years of research. Yet Ultrahuman seems less interested in selling Photon as a standalone wellness gadget and instead growing its health ecosystem for all.
Photon is available for pre-order now, with deliveries expected to begin in June 2026.
