The Witcher 3 is 10 years old – and it’s somehow getting another expansion

CD Projekt Red and Fool’s Theory are sending Geralt of Rivia back into The Witcher 3 nearly a decade after launch. A new expansion titled Songs of the Past is scheduled for 2027.

The surprise announcement confirms that the 2015 RPG still isn’t finished with new content. The long-rumoured expansion is in development for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

At this stage, CD Projekt Red has not shared specifics on scope, pricing or exact timing beyond a broad 2027 release window, but we know that the game’s system requirements will have to change to “ensure smooth performance and compatibility” going forward. The studio says this will take place from the next update.

On X, the studio also confirmed it had planned to reveal the expansion in today’s anniversary stream, but leaks changed its plans. “We had planned to announce Songs of the Past in Thursday’s live stream, but let’s say we found something we didn’t yet expect on RED Launcher,” it said.

There are lofty expectations for the expansion, which follows Hearts of Stone and Blood of Wine – two incredible DLCs which helped define The Witcher 3 as one of the best RPGs of all-time.

And with The Witcher 4 currently in development, alongside a remake of The Witcher 1, and a multiplayer game, the developer certainly has its work cut out.
