Nintendo has moved to tighten access to the multi-language Switch 2 at its official Japanese store, introducing an account playtime requirement designed to filter out resellers targeting the console’s lower Japanese retail price.
The multi-language model has become a reseller magnet because it costs considerably less in Japan than in several international markets, giving bulk buyers room to import units and mark them up abroad while official stock remains constrained across major territories.
Nintendo confirmed on X that it had identified multiple orders linked to suspected resale activity and suspended sales of the multi-language variant as an interim measure, with tighter purchase conditions set to apply when sales resume through the Japanese store.
Under the new requirements, a buyer’s Nintendo Account must show a minimum of 50 hours of playtime on the original Nintendo Switch, recorded before 11:59 PM on 31 May 2026, with playtime from demo software and free titles excluded from the qualifying total.
That playtime threshold targets fresh accounts directly, as newly created accounts will have no legitimate Switch history to draw on, leaving bulk buyers with little practical route around the restriction without using accounts tied to genuine long-term ownership.
Nintendo has also capped purchases at one console per Nintendo Account, a limit that compounds the playtime requirement by removing the option to place multiple orders through the same credentials even for accounts that do clear the playtime check.
Valve applied a structurally similar approach when the Steam Deck faced comparable resale pressure, introducing a reservation queue, purchase-history checks, and a one-unit-per-account cap that reduced the window for bulk buyers operating through fresh accounts.
The Japan-exclusive Switch 2, which supports only Japanese text and characters, falls outside the new restrictions entirely, as its limited usability abroad makes it a considerably less attractive target for resellers operating in international markets.
Nintendo has not confirmed when sales of the multi-language Switch 2 will resume through the Japanese store, though the company’s statement on X indicated the pause was a temporary measure pending the rollout of the updated purchase conditions.
