Apple’s touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro won’t launch with next-gen chips

Apple’s long-rumoured touchscreen MacBook may not come with a completely new chip.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says Apple’s first touchscreen MacBook models are expected to launch with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. That means the new laptops could arrive before the reported jump to M7 Pro and M7 Max chips.

The 14-inch and 16-inch models are expected to launch between the end of 2026 and early 2027. The release window is notable because Apple is reportedly planning to skip the high-end M6 Pro and M6 Max chips altogether.

Instead, Apple is expected to introduce the standard M7 chip in early 2027, followed by the M7 Pro and M7 Max later in the year. Gurman says the M7 versions of the touchscreen MacBook are already in advanced testing and could arrive by the end of 2027.

The first touchscreen MacBook is expected to be a major change for Apple’s laptop line. Alongside the touch display, the new models are also reportedly getting an OLED screen, a redesigned body, and a Dynamic Island-style interface similar to the one used on recent iPhones.

With all of those changes combined, this could be one of the most significant MacBook updates in years. Apple has avoided touchscreen Macs for a long time, even as Windows laptops have offered touch displays across a wide range of prices.

The move to OLED is certainly getting us excited. Apple already uses OLED on the best iPhones and iPad Pro, but the MacBook Pro uses mini-LED technology. A switch to OLED should bring better contrast, deeper blacks, and a more modern display setup as well.

Apple has confirmed none of this, so the usual caution still applies. But if the details are correct, Apple’s touchscreen MacBook could arrive sooner than expected, even if the bigger M7 chip upgrade follows later.
