WhatsApp is finally rolling out one of its most anticipated features – username reservations are now open ahead of a wider launch later this year.
The messaging app says users can now reserve a unique username, giving them a new way to connect without sharing their phone number. Utilising the username won’t be available right away though; WhatsApp is opening reservations early because it expects high demand among its more than three billion users.
If you’ve ever been reluctant to hand out your phone number to someone you’ve just met, this update is aimed squarely at you.
How to get a WhatsApp username
Once the feature reaches your account, you’ll find the option under Settings > Account > Username.
From there, you can reserve a username before the feature officially launches over the coming months. WhatsApp says it will notify users when usernames become available in their country.
The company is also making it easier for creators, businesses and organisations to keep a consistent identity across Meta’s platforms. If you already use a Facebook or Instagram username, you’ll be able to claim the same one on WhatsApp. This is possible provided it’s available.
Importantly, WhatsApp isn’t turning usernames into another social network – which is great to hear. There won’t be a public directory, searchable profiles or suggested accounts to browse. Instead, someone will need to know your exact username before they can start a conversation.
To add another layer of privacy, WhatsApp is also introducing an optional username key. Users can require others to enter this key before they’re allowed to send a message. This will help reduce unwanted contact and spam.
The privacy benefits extend beyond first impressions, too. Once usernames launch, people or businesses you message for the first time won’t automatically see your phone number. This applies if you’ve chosen to use a username instead.
With billions of users expected to compete for the same names, reserving a username early could be worthwhile. And if your preferred handle has already gone, WhatsApp says it has a built-in username generator. This can suggest available alternatives.
The rollout begins this week for reservations, while the usernames themselves will become usable gradually later this year.
