Samsung’s free storage upgrades could be a thing of the past

Samsung’s generous free storage upgrade offer could soon be coming to an end.

The upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Flip 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra may no longer receive the company’s long-running “Free Double Storage” promotion when pre-ordering.

According to Korean publication Chosun, Samsung is planning to scale back one of its most popular launch incentives as rising memory prices continue to put pressure on margins. If accurate, it would mark the biggest change to the promotion since it was introduced alongside the Galaxy S23 series in 2023.

Until now, Samsung has typically offered pre-order customers a free jump to the next storage tier. That meant buyers choosing a 256GB model would receive the 512GB version at no extra cost, while buyers of 512GB models could often upgrade to 1TB without paying more.

That may no longer be the case for the next generation of foldables.

Instead, the report claims Samsung will offer a 50% discount on the storage upgrade rather than making it completely free. Based on current pricing, buyers upgrading to the next storage tier could pay around 126,500 won (roughly $90 / £65) instead of receiving the additional capacity at no extra charge.

The move reportedly comes as the company looks to offset the rising cost of memory components, an issue that has affected much of the smartphone industry over the past year. Samsung has already hinted at higher component costs in recent earnings guidance. Meanwhile, several manufacturers have warned that rising DRAM and NAND prices are likely to increase hardware costs.

The timing also lines up with Samsung’s next major hardware event. Galaxy Unpacked is scheduled for 22 July, with the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Flip 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra all expected to debut. The report claims Korean pre-orders will run from 28 July to 3 August ahead of an expected retail release on 7 August.

For now, Samsung hasn’t confirmed any changes to its pre-order offers, so it’s worth treating the report with a degree of caution until the company officially unveils its next foldables. If free storage upgrades do disappear, prospective buyers may have to rethink whether pre-ordering offers the same value it once did.
