Claude AI can now use your 1Password logins – but should you let it?

Anthropic’s Claude can now help with tasks that require logging into your accounts, but without actually seeing your passwords.

1Password has announced 1Password for Claude, a new integration. This lets its password manager securely provide login credentials to Claude.

At the same time, it keeps sensitive information away from the AI model itself. The feature is available now for 1Password users on Mac across individual, family and business plans.

The main aim is to solve one of the biggest concerns around AI agents, which is handing over account credentials. Rather than exposing usernames, passwords or one-time passcodes to Claude, 1Password injects them directly into the website or service being accessed. Importantly, according to the company, the credentials never reach Anthropic’s servers. They also do not reach Claude’s memory or the AI model itself.

That means users can ask Claude to carry out tasks such as booking travel, managing online accounts or completing multi-step workflows. In this process, they do not need to manually copy and paste passwords each time.

To make that possible, 1Password has built what it calls a “zero-exposure security framework.” Access is granted only for the current session and only to the specific credentials the user approves. Then, once the task is finished, that permission expires. It does not carry over to future sessions.

The system also supports authenticated multi-site workflows, allowing Claude to move between different services without repeatedly asking for login details. Meanwhile, it keeps credentials isolated from the AI.

Alongside the Claude integration, 1Password is introducing a new Agentic Mode across its browser extension. When it detects that an AI agent is controlling the browser, the extension automatically limits access to only the passwords explicitly approved for that task. Furthermore, users can also see when this protection is active directly within the extension.

The company says it additionally scans pages after every autofill. This is to make sure no sensitive information has been left visible once credentials have been entered.

For now, the feature is exclusive to Claude, although 1Password says support for other AI agents will follow as the ecosystem expands. In addition, the company also plans to add support for securely sharing payment cards and identity documents after launch.

To use the new integration, users will need the 1Password desktop app and browser extension, alongside the Claude desktop app and browser extension. If it works as advertised, it could remove one of the biggest barriers to using AI agents for everyday tasks. This would happen without forcing users to compromise on password security.
