Insta360 has launched the X6, its new flagship 360 camera, with a major focus on image quality, AI-powered editing and versatility.
Most notably, the Insta360 X6 is the first 360 camera to support native, in-camera Dolby Vision video. It also features 8K recording and a new dual-sensor setup.
The X6 goes on sale 12 August, priced from $699.99. It is designed to cover everything from travel and everyday shooting to cycling, motorcycling and underwater photography.
The headline upgrade is the camera’s new imaging system. The X6 uses dual Sony 1/1.1-inch square sensors. Insta360 says this delivers 33% more sensor area than the previous X5 and around four times the light intake per frame. A triple AI chip system also provides 500% more computing power than its predecessor. This helps with detail, colour and low-light performance.
The X6 can record 360-degree footage at 8K and 50fps, while its new Dolby Vision support adds dynamic metadata to adjust contrast and brightness on a frame-by-frame basis. Combined with 10-bit colour and more than 1.07 billion recordable colours, it should give users more flexibility. In particular, this is the case when shooting HDR footage straight from the camera.
One camera, three shooting modes
Insta360 is positioning the X6 as more than just a 360 camera. It can switch between 360-degree capture, a subject-tracking gimbal-style camera and a traditional single-lens action camera.
Its InstaFrame 2.0 mode can track people, pets and objects to produce flat 4K footage without requiring the user to reframe the shot manually. Additionally, single-lens recording goes up to 5K/60fps. Moreover, 4K/120fps is available for slow-motion footage.
The camera also introduces PanoMind, Insta360’s 360-native AI system. It can analyse spherical footage directly on the camera and automatically create highlight edits through its AI Director feature. Impressively, this can happen while the X6 is charging.
Hardware improvements include a 2.32-inch OLED display with up to 1,200 nits brightness. There is also a 2,600mAh battery offering up to 140 minutes of 8K30 recording, and waterproofing to 20 metres without a case. Finally, there is 47GB of usable built-in storage.
The X6 launches on 12 August for $669.99 in its Standard Bundle, with additional bundles available. Early buyers can also receive a year of Insta360+ Premium cloud storage when they purchase and activate the camera before 30 September.
