Meta has launched a beta Meta AI app for Mac, bringing its AI assistant to the desktop with screen sharing and built-in dictation.
The new Mac app can connect with Facebook and Instagram, allowing Meta AI to access analytics and answer questions about performance. It can also connect to Google Workspace to access documents, although Meta says this requires a professional Facebook or Instagram account.
One of the more useful additions is screen sharing. During a session, users can share a window with Meta AI using screen capture, allowing the assistant to provide advice based on what is currently on screen. That could be useful for creators working on content or businesses analysing data. In this way, they don’t have to explain everything manually.
Meta has also built dictation directly into the app, and it works across all apps on the Mac. Rather than being limited to conversations within Meta AI, users can use the feature while working elsewhere on their computer.
The launch is part of a wider push by Meta to add more AI tools for businesses and creators. The company says Meta AI will be able to handle recurring tasks and reminders. It will also generate decks, documents and spreadsheets.
There is, however, a privacy consideration for anyone using the new app. Meta’s privacy policy states that interactions with features that are part of AI at Meta are used to train its models. That could be worth keeping in mind for businesses and creators. This is especially true for those who plan to share work-related information or documents with the assistant.
Meta AI itself is free to use, although Meta also offers Meta One plans that provide higher rate limits.
For now, the Mac app remains in beta, so Meta could still change or expand its features before a wider release
