Poco has launched its new F9 Ultra with a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip, a dedicated display processor and support for gaming at up to 185fps, giving it the kind of hardware usually associated with dedicated gaming phones.
Announced alongside the Poco F9 Pro, the F9 Ultra is the more ambitious model of the two. It combines Qualcomm’s latest flagship mobile platform with Poco’s new VisionBoost D8 chip, which enables its Smart Frame Rate technology to push supported games to 185fps. Poco says more than 20 titles can run natively at that frame rate, while another five can reach it using Smart Frame Rate.
That’s backed by some serious touch hardware. The F9 Ultra has a 4,800Hz instant touch sampling rate, 480Hz 10-point touch sampling and a 200Hz gyroscope sampling rate. Poco claims the move from 120fps to 185fps cuts the refresh interval by 3ms, potentially giving players a little more time to react in fast-moving games.
The phone also gets a 6.9-inch 185Hz HyperRGB AMOLED display, using Poco’s new full RGB subpixel structure. It can reach 4,500 nits of peak brightness, with HDR content capable of reaching 10,000 nits. There’s also a 3D IceLoop cooling system designed to keep performance stable during longer gaming sessions.
Battery life could be another advantage. The F9 Ultra packs an 8,050mAh battery, the largest ever fitted to a Poco F-series phone, with 100W wired and 50W wireless charging. With that on board, Poco claims it can deliver up to two days of battery life.
The gaming credentials continue with Sound by Bose tuning, including a 2.1-channel speaker system with a dedicated subwoofer. A Game audio mode also boosts footsteps while retaining other in-game sounds, helping players identify where audio cues are coming from.
It isn’t just a gaming phone, either. The F9 Ultra has a 200MP OIS main camera, a 5x periscope telephoto with 10x lossless zoom and 20x AI Ultra Zoom, plus a 32MP selfie camera.
The Poco F9 Ultra starts at £899 for 12GB/256GB, rising to £999 for 16GB/512GB and £1,199 for 16GB/1TB. With flagship silicon, an unusually high-refresh display and an 8,050mAh battery, it looks like a serious alternative to more specialised gaming phones.
