Dreame’s Leaptic Cube is taking a rather different approach to the action camera, with a modular design that lets you stack extra hardware onto the camera when you need more battery life or functionality. It will launch in Europe in October for €400 ($464).
The Leaptic Cube was first announced earlier this year, but Dreame has now confirmed its pricing and availability after showing the camera at IFA in Berlin. Since the original announcement, the setup has also gained a new power bank module, giving users another way to extend its battery life.
At its smallest, the Leaptic Cube consists of a compact camera module that can be used on its own. Dreame says this makes it smaller and lighter than rivals such as the DJI Osmo Action 4, which could make it particularly useful for mounting on something like a helmet or even a dog’s collar.
If you need more runtime, the camera can be stacked with a touchscreen module that also includes a larger battery. This increases the claimed battery life from 90 minutes to 200 minutes. The power bank module can then be added to extend it further, although Dreame hasn’t provided a specific runtime for that configuration.
The modular approach is fairly flexible, too. The modules can be stacked in different orders, while control is available through the touchscreen or Dreame’s smartphone app. There’s also an underwater housing among the planned accessories, giving the camera a little more scope beyond standard action shots.
As for the camera itself, the Leaptic Cube packs a 50-megapixel, 1/1.3-inch sensor with an f/2.8 ultra-wide-angle lens offering a 155-degree field of view. It can record 8K video, 4K HDR video and 4K slow-motion at 120fps, while Dreame claims up to 13.5 stops of dynamic range.
That combination of a genuinely tiny standalone camera and stackable modules could make the Leaptic Cube more interesting than another conventional action cam. We’ll have to wait until October to see whether the modular idea is as useful in practice as it sounds.
