Xiaomi could be preparing a new compact flagship tablet with an OLED display, potentially giving Apple’s upcoming OLED iPad mini some serious competition.
The tablet is still only rumoured, but reports suggest Xiaomi is working on a premium model with a compact design and a powerful chipset. That’s notable because most small tablets currently stick with LCD panels, with the Oppo Pad Mini and RedMagic Astra 2 among the few exceptions using OLED.
Xiaomi already has experience with this form factor through its Redmi K Pad range. Both generations use an 8.8-inch display and flagship processors, although they rely on LCD panels and are positioned as performance-focused Redmi devices. This new model is reportedly set to carry the Xiaomi branding instead, with OLED being one of its biggest upgrades.
According to Digital Chat Station, the tablet could take design cues from Xiaomi’s new 18 Fold, including similarly compact dimensions and narrow bezels. Another leaker, Smart Pikachu, claims development work has already started.
The display is one of the few details currently doing the rounds. The chipset is less certain, although the device has reportedly been teased with a “desired chipset”, which could point to Xiaomi’s new Xring O3. If that’s what Xiaomi has in mind, this wouldn’t just be a small tablet designed for casual browsing.
It could also put Xiaomi directly up against Apple’s rumoured OLED iPad mini 8. Apple’s next mini is expected to feature an 8.4-inch OLED display and the A19 Pro chip, although it’s tipped to stick with a 60Hz refresh rate.
There’s still plenty we don’t know about Xiaomi’s tablet, including its exact screen size, refresh rate, battery, pricing and launch date. For now, the combination of a compact body, OLED panel and potentially high-end silicon is enough to make it an interesting prospect.
If Xiaomi can keep the device genuinely small while giving it flagship-level performance, it could be one of the more compelling compact tablets to watch.
