Apple may already have bigger plans for its foldable iPhone.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says the company could eventually launch an “iPhone Duo Max”, with a larger display and a name that leaves plenty of room for more foldable models in the future.
Gurman made the prediction in his latest Power On newsletter, explaining that Apple’s choice of the “Duo” name could be more significant than it first appears. Before the iPhone Duo was unveiled, Apple employees had reportedly referred to the device internally as the “iPhone Ultra”, although that name may have been influenced by the speculation surrounding the foldable.
Instead, Apple settled on “Duo”, following the short suffixes already used for products such as Air and Pro. According to Gurman, that also gives Apple more flexibility if it decides to expand the foldable range.
The first potential addition could be the iPhone Duo Max, which would presumably offer a larger display than the standard Duo. Gurman also floated the possibility of an “iPhone Duo SE” with more modest specifications, while a future “Duo Mini” could use a clamshell-style design.
There isn’t much more to go on for now, and Gurman doesn’t provide a timeframe or specific display size for the larger model. So, this is firmly a look at where Apple could take the range rather than a confirmed product roadmap.
Still, Gurman is clearly bullish on the first iPhone Duo. He expects it to become the “predominant foldable phone on the market”, pointing to Apple’s software adaptations, hardware quality and durability as reasons it could stand out from existing foldables.
That’s a fairly big prediction, particularly for a product category that Apple hasn’t entered before. But if the Duo does prove popular, expanding it into different sizes and price points would make sense. A larger Duo Max could give Apple a direct answer to foldables that prioritise big-screen productivity, while a smaller or cheaper model could make the format more accessible.
For now, though, there’s only one Duo to worry about. The Max, SE and Mini versions remain possibilities rather than products Apple has confirmed.
