Huawei’s stunning new foldable gives us an early look at the iPhone Fold

Huawei may have just given us a clearer idea of what Apple’s long-rumoured foldable iPhone could look like.

The newly announced Pura X Max, set to launch in China next week, uses a wide, book-style folding design. This closely matches recent leaks around Apple’s first foldable.

What makes the Pura X Max interesting isn’t just that it folds – it’s how it folds. Unlike the tall, narrow designs seen on many of the best foldables, Huawei is leaning into a wider aspect ratio. This is something that’s also been heavily rumoured for Apple’s upcoming device, along with the Galaxy Wide Fold from Samsung.

Early reports suggest Apple is aiming for a more tablet-like experience when unfolded. Rather than the elongated phone shape we’ve seen from rivals, this could stand out.

Huawei hasn’t shared full specs yet, but the Pura X Max appears to build on last year’s smaller Pura X. That model already experimented with an extra-wide flip-style design. Official images show the new model being used in both portrait and landscape. This hints at a more flexible approach to apps and multitasking. There’s also a visible triple-lens rear camera, suggesting this isn’t a stripped-back concept device.

The timing is notable. Apple’s foldable iPhone, sometimes referred to as the “iPhone Ultra” in leaks, is expected to arrive alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models next September. Current rumours point to a 5.5-inch outer display and a 7.8-inch inner screen. This puts it close to iPad mini territory when unfolded. Pricing is expected to start at around $2,000.

Other Android brands seem to be circling the same idea, too. Oppo’s Find N series has already explored wider foldables.

None of this confirms Apple’s final design, of course. But if the Pura X Max is anything to go by, the next wave of foldables could move away from tall, phone-like screens. Instead, they could move closer to something that feels more like a compact tablet you can fold in half.
