Google is finally introducing one of the most obvious gaps in its AI-powered voicemail system.
Pixel phones are starting to get custom greetings for “Take a Message”, adding a personal touch that’s arguably been missing since the feature first launched.
Introduced alongside newer Pixel devices last year, Take a Message acts as a modern, on-device voicemail system and includes real-time transcription. But while it does handle calls smartly, it always sounded the same, as callers were greeted by a generic assistant voice rather than a personalised option. That’s now changing.
The new update, currently rolling out via the Phone by Google beta app, allows users to record their own voicemail message directly on the device.
From the Take a Message menu in the Settings app, you get a surprisingly flexible setup. Not only is there a recorder that supports clips up to 60 seconds long, but you’ll also get the ability to save multiple greetings instead of just one. You can rename, delete or set a default message using a simple menu system. Additionally, a star icon shows which greeting is active.

It’s a small change on paper, but it fixes a bigger usability issue. By keeping everything inside the Phone app, Google is effectively replacing the clunky, carrier-based voicemail setup with something faster and far more intuitive. No more dialling into voicemail menus just to update a greeting.
Right now, the feature is limited to a single default greeting for all calls. However, there are hints Google could take it further. Previous code suggests support for contact-specific greetings may arrive later. This would let you customise messages depending on who’s calling.
The update is beginning to appear on Pixel 6 and newer devices running the beta version of the Phone app. With the interface already fully functional, a wider rollout to stable users likely isn’t far off.
It’s not the flashiest AI upgrade Google has shipped, but it might be one of the most overdue.
