Gemini Live is getting a new look that we much prefer

Google is testing a notable redesign for Gemini Live on Android, and the biggest change is also the most obvious.

As shared by 9to5Google, the feature is moving away from its familiar fullscreen interface. Instead, it favours something more integrated within the Gemini app itself.

Instead of taking over the entire screen, Gemini Live now sits directly on the app’s homepage. When activated, the top bar simply switches to “Live with Gemini” and adds a transcript button. Meanwhile, the rest of the interface adapts around it. It’s a quieter approach, but one that feels more in line with how the rest of the app works.

The controls have also been reworked. At the bottom, the traditional prompt box is replaced with a pill-shaped container featuring a blue waveform. From here, users can quickly access key features: camera or screen sharing on the left, and a microphone mute toggle on the right. In addition, tapping the keyboard exits the Live mode. This is also true for the usual system back gesture.

It’s not the first time Google has experimented with the layout. Earlier tests leaned more minimalist, hiding some controls behind gestures like double-tapping the waveform to mute. This latest version takes the opposite approach, making those controls more visible and easier to access without guesswork.

The redesign is currently rolling out to users on the Google app beta (version 17.14), though it’s limited to the main Gemini app for now. The floating overlay version of Gemini Live hasn’t been updated yet. However, Google is expected to bring it in line with this new design later.

Dropping the fullscreen UI is a bold shift. While it wasn’t strictly necessary, it gave Gemini Live a clear identity and made it feel distinct from the rest of the app. It is something Google even leaned into in its early marketing.

This new design trades that identity for simplicity and consistency. Whether that’s an upgrade will likely come down to how much users value a cleaner interface over a more immersive one.
