Valve’s long-promised living room push still isn’t fully here, but at least part of it has finally landed.
The company has confirmed the new Steam Controller will go on sale May 4 despite its wider Steam Machine plans remaining in limbo.
That means you won’t need to wait for Valve’s console to try the controller. In fact, Valve is positioning it as a flexible option that works across Steam Deck, PCs, and even phones. It isn’t tied to a single bit of hardware.
The staggered rollout comes after delays caused by hardware supply issues last year. These issues forced Valve to rethink its timeline. While the Steam Machine and the rumoured Steam Frame headset are still in development, Valve says it’s “hard at work” on both, but has nothing concrete to share yet.
In the meantime, the controller is stepping up as the first real piece of that ecosystem. Early hands-on impressions suggest it leans heavily into what players already liked about the Steam Deck. Essentially, it shrinks that experience into a more traditional gamepad. That includes support for existing controller profiles and a familiar layout for anyone already embedded in Valve’s ecosystem.
There are a few caveats. Without the Steam Machine, some features haven’t been fully tested yet. This includes how the controller interacts with Valve’s dedicated wireless setup or potential VR integrations. However, the controller does include infrared LEDs for tracking in VR, hinting at future compatibility with the still-unannounced headset.
Valve says it has built a “significant quantity” of units ahead of launch, though it isn’t guaranteeing supply will meet demand. The company is also continuing its partnership with iFixit for repairability, and it may introduce extra features post-launch, including better battery indicators and adjustable speaker controls.
Pricing lands at $99 / £85 / €99, slightly higher than initially expected. Valve attributes this to rising shipping and production costs rather than the earlier RAM shortages that delayed the wider hardware lineup.
So while the bigger picture of Valve’s living room ambitions is still taking shape, the Steam Controller is arriving first. And it looks like Valve is betting it can stand on its own for now.
