Plex is about to make its high-end subscription a whole lot less tempting.
Starting July 1, the company will raise the price of Plex Pass from $249.99 to a staggering $749.99. This effectively triples the cost overnight.
That’s a huge jump, even by modern streaming subscription standards, and Plex knows it. In fact, the company says it briefly considered removing the lifetime option entirely before settling on the new pricing instead.
For anyone unfamiliar, Plex Pass is the premium tier for Plex. It is the long-running media server platform that lets users stream their own movie, TV, and music libraries across devices. The free version still exists. However, Plex Pass unlocks extras like remote streaming, offline downloads, intro skipping, hardware transcoding, and more advanced server controls.

According to Plex, recurring monthly and yearly subscriptions have become increasingly important for funding long-term development. The new lifetime pricing is meant to better reflect the “ongoing value” of the software.
Still, going from $250 to $750 in the space of a few months is hard to ignore. Plex only raised the lifetime subscription price earlier this year, jumping from $120 to $249.99 back in March 2025. Now it’s climbing even further into “serious enthusiast” territory.
To soften the blow a little, Plex also outlined several upcoming features currently in development. These include automatic downloads for new TV episodes and improved library organisation tools in the mobile app. In addition, there will be dialogue enhancement features designed to make speech clearer while watching movies or shows.
The timing also says a lot about where Plex sees itself heading. The company has spent the last few years evolving beyond just a DIY media server app. Plex is pushing more heavily into streaming content, rentals, and subscription features. This latest pricing move feels like another sign that Plex is increasingly targeting its most dedicated power users. It seems less focused on casual streamers.
The new Plex Pass lifetime price takes effect on July 1 at 12:01AM UTC. This translates to June 30 at 8:01PM ET in the US. Anyone thinking about locking in a lifetime subscription probably doesn’t have long left to decide.
