Apple has detailed watchOS 27, a software update arriving this autumn that brings an overhauled Siri experience, expanded health tracking capabilities, and a series of interface refinements across Apple Watch Series 9 and later.
The headline addition is Siri AI, a conversational assistant powered by Apple Intelligence that moves beyond simple commands to support open-ended questions, back-and-forth exchanges, and personal context retrieval, covering everything from saved notes to upcoming booking details stored across apps.
Siri AI launches in English later this year, with availability confirmed for Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Ultra 2, and Apple Watch SE 3 when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone, though the feature will not be available in the EU at launch on iOS and iPadOS.
A dedicated Siri app accompanies the assistant upgrade, consolidating conversations in a single location and allowing users to begin a query on iPhone and continue it on Apple Watch, with the option to pin individual conversations for quick access directly from the wrist.
The dynamic app grid builds on that Siri integration by automatically surfacing suggested apps based on usage patterns, with the Siri app fixed permanently at the centre of the grid as Apple pushes the assistant towards a more central role in the watchOS experience.
On the fitness side, Workout Buddy gains new data insights covering pace, distance, and workout duration progress, adds Spanish language support, and now operates without requiring an iPhone nearby, addressing a practical limitation that previously restricted its usefulness during outdoor runs and gym sessions.
Apple has also improved indoor run and walk distance measurement through updated motion tracking algorithms, while Cycle Tracking in the Health app gains perimenopause and menopause support, delivering notifications when logged cycle patterns suggest perimenopause for users aged 40 and above.
System-level changes include a new single tap gesture for Smart Stack widget selection, expanded Smart Stack suggestions covering birthdays, parked car location, and transit card balances, and a Call Context feature that surfaces relevant app information during phone calls, such as confirmation codes when calling an airline.
