ChatGPT could soon shop for you thanks to new Visa deal

ChatGPT could soon do more than help you find products online; it may actually buy them for you.

OpenAI has announced a new partnership with Visa that could allow AI agents, including those powering ChatGPT, to make purchases on a user’s behalf. The idea is simple: instead of searching for products, comparing prices and checking out yourself, you could ask ChatGPT to handle the entire process.

Need more printer ink? Running low on coffee pods? Looking for a new pair of wireless headphones within a set budget? OpenAI’s vision is that an AI agent could handle those tasks from start to finish.

The partnership will see Visa’s payment infrastructure integrated into OpenAI’s AI experiences, including ChatGPT and the company’s upcoming Atlas browser. While the AI handles the shopping side of things, Visa would manage the payment process behind the scenes.

Importantly, users won’t be handing over unrestricted spending power. According to Visa, purchases would use tokenised card credentials rather than exposing actual card details. This is similar to how Apple Pay works today. Users would also be able to set spending limits, restrict which merchants an AI agent can buy from and require approval for certain purchases.

Those safeguards are likely to be crucial if AI-powered shopping is going to gain mainstream acceptance. Asking ChatGPT to recommend a product is one thing; allowing it to spend your money is another entirely.

The move also represents a second attempt by OpenAI to push further into e-commerce. Earlier efforts, including a feature called Instant Checkout, failed to gain significant traction with retailers and were ultimately discontinued. This time, however, OpenAI is leaning on one of the world’s largest payment networks rather than building the infrastructure itself.

For Visa, it’s part of a wider push into what it calls “Intelligent Commerce” – a future where AI assistants not only help consumers make decisions but also complete purchases.

There’s still plenty we don’t know. Neither company has shared a launch date, pricing details or exactly how the experience will look inside ChatGPT. But if the partnership delivers on its promise, it could mark one of the biggest shifts yet in how people shop online.

Instead of using AI to help make a purchase, the next step may be letting AI make it for you.
