Microsoft’s new Surface Pro 12 arrives with a huge price increase

Microsoft has officially launched the new Surface Pro 12.

This brings a substantial hardware upgrade to its flagship 2-in-1. Powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon X2 platform, the new model adds support for up to 64GB of RAM. It also offers a 120Hz OLED display and improved battery life.

At first glance, the Surface Pro 12 looks familiar. It retains the same 13-inch form factor as its predecessor. The device comes complete with a 3:2 aspect ratio and a resolution of 2880 x 1920. However, Microsoft is once again offering both IPS and OLED display options.

Notably, the OLED panel is capable of reaching up to 900 nits of HDR brightness, compared to 600 nits on the standard display.

Beneath the surface is where the biggest changes can be found. Microsoft is pairing the Surface Pro 12 with either a 10-core Snapdragon X2 Plus or a 12-core Snapdragon X2 Elite processor. However, the company has yet to provide detailed performance figures.

Buyers can configure the device with 16GB, 24GB, 32GB, or 64GB of LPDDR5X RAM. Additionally, you can choose up to 1TB of SSD storage.

Battery life has also received a boost. Microsoft claims the new Surface Pro can deliver up to 11.5 hours of active web usage. This represents a 15% improvement over the previous Surface Pro 11.

The device measures 287 x 209 x 9.3mm and weighs 895g without a keyboard attached. It will be available in Black, Dune, and Platinum, with matching Flex Keyboard accessories offered separately.

The Surface Pro 12 starts at $1499. This price gets you a Snapdragon X2 Plus processor, 16GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and an IPS display. That makes it significantly more expensive than the Surface Pro 11, which launched at $999.

While Microsoft is clearly positioning the Surface Pro 12 as an AI-ready premium PC, the headline upgrades are easy to spot. Between the jump to 64GB of RAM, the return of a 120Hz OLED panel, and longer battery life, this looks like Microsoft’s most powerful Surface Pro yet.
