Apple, Google and Xiaomi have discussed 50W wireless charging – but don’t expect it soon

The next big leap in wireless charging could already be taking shape after Xiaomi hosted a key industry meeting to help develop the upcoming Qi 50W standard.

The event brought together more than 20 companies across the industry, including Apple, Google, Huawei, Honor, Oppo, Vivo, Philips, Anker and the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC). They met to discuss, test and verify the next-generation charging standard.

The latest meeting suggests development is steadily moving towards a 2028 launch for Qi 50W.

According to the report, the conference, held at Xiaomi’s Beijing headquarters, focused on three key areas: refining the specification, testing prototype hardware and ensuring devices from different manufacturers can work together reliably. Moreover, it’s also the first time a WPC Qi Off-cycle Meeting has been hosted in Beijing. This highlights China’s growing influence in wireless charging development.

If adopted, Qi 50W would double the maximum charging speed of the Qi2 25W standard. By comparison, the original Qi2 specification launched with support for 15W charging and introduced magnetic alignment. This brings Android devices closer to Apple’s MagSafe-style experience.

One of the more interesting developments is Xiaomi’s proposed charging architecture. Rather than simply increasing power, the company is pushing a “small inductance, low voltage, high power” design. Xiaomi says this can improve efficiency, reduce heat and make it easier to fit wireless charging hardware into slimmer devices. The proposal officially entered the Qi standard drafting process earlier this year after demonstrations and cross-brand compatibility testing.

The companies attending the meeting represent almost every part of the wireless charging ecosystem, from smartphone makers and chip designers to accessory manufacturers, automotive suppliers and testing laboratories. Consequently, that broad participation should help ensure the final standard works across a wide range of devices. It should also help prevent it from benefiting just a handful of brands.

There’s still a long wait before consumers can take advantage of 50W Qi charging, with the standard currently scheduled for release in 2028.
