Lenovo is preparing another addition to its Legion gaming tablet lineup and this one looks set to be even more portable than the current Legion Tab Gen 5.
The company has officially confirmed a new compact Legion gaming tablet, which will launch in China this August. Lenovo is keeping most of the specs under wraps for now, but the headline feature is its built-in 5G connectivity. This will make it easier to game online without relying on Wi-Fi.
The announcement follows the launch of the latest Legion Y700, which debuted as one of the first gaming tablets powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip. It later arrived internationally as the Legion Tab Gen 5. That model paired flagship performance with an 8.8-inch display. However, Lenovo appears to be taking portability a step further with this new version.
Lenovo first showed off the device during the Shenzhen Nuclear Fusion Gaming Carnival. After that, they confirmed it as a separate variant of the Legion Y700. Promotional images also give an early look at the design. These reveal a punch-hole front camera rather than the thicker bezels typically found on gaming tablets. While the bezels don’t appear significantly slimmer than those on the current Legion Tab Gen 5, the overall design still looks clean and modern.
Perhaps the biggest rumoured upgrade is the display. The current Legion Tab Gen 5 uses an IPS LCD panel. However, this upcoming model is widely expected to switch to OLED. If that proves accurate, users could benefit from deeper blacks. In addition, there would be improved contrast and punchier colours. These are all welcome improvements for gaming and media consumption.
There’s still some uncertainty around what’s powering the tablet. Lenovo hasn’t confirmed the processor. And while it could reuse the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 found in the current model, reports suggest there’s also a chance it could instead use a MediaTek Dimensity chipset.
With 5G confirmed and an OLED display reportedly on the cards, Lenovo’s next compact Legion tablet is shaping up to be a notable upgrade rather than a simple refresh. More details are waiting to surface ahead of its official launch in China next month.
