Honor’s Robot Phone launch could be around the corner

Honor’s unusual Robot Phone may finally be getting a launch date.

After confirming earlier this year that the device would arrive in China sometime in the third quarter of 2026, a new report now suggests the company could unveil it as soon as August.

The latest claim comes from well-known Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station, who says Honor is narrowing in on an August announcement. While Honor has yet to officially confirm a date, the timing lines up with the company’s previous promise of a Q3 launch.

What makes the Robot Phone stand out isn’t the name, but its camera. Rather than using a traditional fixed camera module, the handset features a retractable gimbal camera that extends from the phone’s body when needed.

The setup is designed to deliver smoother handheld footage while also supporting features like automatic subject tracking often found on gimbal cameras. This makes it feel more like a compact camera than a typical smartphone.

The concept shares plenty in common with dedicated creator devices such as DJI’s Osmo Pocket series and Insta360’s recently announced Luna camera. Both of these use motorised gimbals to stabilise footage and follow moving subjects. By building similar technology directly into a smartphone, Honor appears to be targeting users who regularly shoot video without carrying extra gear.

The Robot Phone has already made a handful of public appearances. Honor first showcased the concept at CES in January before bringing it to MWC in Barcelona a couple of months later. More recently, the company demonstrated its camera capabilities at the Shanghai International Film Festival. There, it was used to capture cinematic video portraits.

Despite those demonstrations, Honor has remained quiet on the finer details. The company has yet to reveal the phone’s specifications, pricing or availability. Therefore, the camera system remains the biggest confirmed feature so far.

If the latest leak proves accurate, though, that wait may soon be over.

Honor still needs to prove that the Robot Phone can deliver a meaningful advantage over conventional flagship cameras. Nevertheless, its retractable gimbal design already makes it one of the more intriguing smartphone launches still to come this year.
