Apple’s next Pro iPhone could be getting noticeably thicker, if a new leak is to be believed.
While slimmer designs have dominated smartphone trends in recent years, the extra bulk could make room for one of the biggest camera upgrades the iPhone has seen in years.
According to Chinese leaker Fixed-focus Digital Cameras on Weibo, the iPhone 18 Pro could measure between 9.9mm and 10.9mm thick, compared with the 8.75mm profile of the current iPhone 17 Pro. The leak also claims Apple will stick with the aluminium alloy frame introduced on this year’s Pro models, rather than switching back to the more premium titanium finish.
The reported increase in thickness isn’t considered purely cosmetic. Instead, it’s believed to accommodate a redesigned rear camera system that could include what may be the iPhone’s first variable-aperture camera.
Unlike a fixed aperture, a variable aperture can adjust the amount of light reaching the sensor. As a result, it could potentially improve both low-light photography and depth-of-field control. The report also claims the new camera module is around 50% more expensive for Apple to produce than the current design.
Separate certification filings from China’s 3C authority also point to slightly larger batteries across both Pro models. The iPhone 18 Pro is listed with a 4,056mAh battery in its SIM version, up from 3,988mAh on the iPhone 17 Pro. Meanwhile, the iPhone 18 Pro Max could see a much larger jump. Its battery may increase from 4,823mAh to 5,391mAh in markets that use physical SIM cards.
Apple never officially publishes battery capacities. Instead, it focuses on estimated battery life. Therefore, these figures won’t be confirmed until the phones are either announced or taken apart after launch.
The iPhone 18 Pro lineup is widely expected to arrive in September, with rumours suggesting it could launch alongside Apple’s long-awaited foldable iPhone.
As always with early leaks, it’s worth treating these details with caution until Apple makes the iPhone 18 Pro official. However, with multiple reports now pointing towards camera and battery upgrades, a thicker design is starting to sound increasingly plausible.
