Android Auto is getting the Google Maps upgrade it needed

Google is rolling out one of the biggest visual upgrades to Google Maps on Android Auto in years, with the long-awaited Immersive Navigation feature is starting to appear for users.

The update transforms the traditional flat map into a much more detailed 3D view. Buildings, bridges and surrounding landmarks appear far more lifelike while you’re driving.

Better still, it doesn’t appear to be tied to the latest Android Auto release. This means some users could receive it through a server-side update without installing a new version.

Rather than changing how navigation works, Immersive Navigation can make routes easier to understand at a glance. Buildings are now rendered with realistic height and depth using Google’s Street View and satellite imagery. Meanwhile, structures automatically become transparent if they would otherwise block your view of the road ahead.

That should make it easier to judge where upcoming turns are in relation to landmarks. You can also identify built-up areas more quickly. Additionally, you can better understand your surroundings without relying solely on the map’s flat perspective.

The rollout comes at a good time for Android Auto users after version 17.2 introduced a number of bugs and stability issues. While Android Auto 17.3 has also started rolling out, reports suggest the new Maps experience isn’t linked to any specific app version. This reinforces the idea that Google is enabling it from its own servers.

That does mean there’s little you can do if the feature hasn’t appeared yet. Updating Android Auto to the latest version may help ensure your system is ready. However, there’s no guarantee it will immediately unlock the new interface.

Google has increasingly focused on bringing richer visuals to Maps across its platforms. This appears to be the next step in making Android Auto feel more modern. Although drivers should always keep their attention on the road, clearer 3D landmarks could make navigation feel more intuitive. This is particularly true in unfamiliar cities or dense urban areas where recognising buildings and road layouts quickly can make a difference.

If you haven’t spotted the update yet, it may simply be a case of waiting a little longer. This is because Google is expanding the rollout over the coming weeks.
