Sony has expanded its professional audio range with the IER-M500, a new pair of in-ear monitors built specifically for musicians and performers who rely on stage monitoring.
That launch fills a specific gap in Sony’s professional audio line-up, since the company already covers recording through its microphone range, mixing and mastering through studio headphones such as the MDR-M1, and playback through its proprietary 360 Reality Audio codec.
IER-M500 relies on Sony’s original fitting supporters alongside noise-isolating earpieces to create a secure, personalised fit, with four earpiece sizes included so musicians can match the monitors to their own ear shape.
A thin polyurethane wall lining the earpieces improves noise isolation and clarity during extended monitoring sessions, while flexible ear hangers and clips add further stability for musicians moving actively on stage.
Sony built IER-M500 around a fully sealed structure paired with a large acoustic chamber, a combination that delivers strong sound isolation even in noisy live environments where stage monitors must compete with amplifiers and crowds.
That same acoustic chamber works alongside a dynamic driver to produce deep, controlled bass, while an optimised internal structure refines high-frequency reproduction for musicians who need to track cues and harmonies precisely.
The monitors also support high-resolution audio across a wide frequency range and provide higher passive isolation than typical in-ear designs, reducing external stage noise and lowering overall sound exposure during long performances.
Monitor engineer Noel Edwards, who has toured with several world-renowned artists and contributed to the development process, described the sound quality as “pretty close” to the custom-fit monitors he typically wears on stage.

No sweat in-ear monitors
IER-M500 also targets the physical demands of live performance, with a design that withstands moisture from stage splashes or sweat without affecting comfort or freedom of movement during a set.
A detachable cable measuring approximately 1.6 metres is built to handle frequent plugging and unplugging between rehearsals, performances and studio sessions, addressing a common failure point for musicians who rely on in-ear monitors daily.
The monitors come in three transparent finishes, clear, black and a combined red and blue option, with clearly marked left and right housings that help performers identify each earpiece quickly backstage.
Sony has also built IER-M500 with sustainability in mind, allocating 35% circular material within the plastics used across the product, a step that reduces reliance on virgin fossil-based plastic materials.
IER-M500 is now available to pre-order at £99, though Sony has not provided a firm release date, with stock currently limited at pre-order stage and further details on regional availability expected to follow closer to the product’s eventual worldwide launch window.
