Spotify is making it easier to control your music without tapping through menus.
The streaming service has announced Talk to Spotify, a new AI-powered feature that lets Premium subscribers use voice or text commands to create playlists, queue songs and ask questions about the music they’re listening to.
Rather than acting as a simple voice search tool, Talk to Spotify can serve as a conversational assistant. From the Home or Now Playing screens, users can ask for recommendations such as “play some artists I haven’t heard before”. Next, they can refine the request with follow-up prompts like “add some Bad Bunny” or “make it more upbeat.”
It also handles everyday playback controls. If you come across a track you like, you can simply ask Spotify to save the song, add it to your queue or follow the artist. This removes the need to navigate through the app while listening.
The feature goes beyond playback, too. From the Now Playing screen, users can ask questions about the music itself. This includes when an album was released, what genre it belongs to or the inspiration behind a particular record. Spotify says Talk to Spotify can also point listeners towards related artists and stories, helping them discover more about the music they’re enjoying.
The same experience extends to podcasts and audiobooks. Users can ask about podcast guests or audiobook authors without leaving the app. Meanwhile, Spotify can also answer questions about your own listening habits. That includes prompts such as “When did I first listen to this song?” or “What genres have I been into recently?”
To access the feature, users simply tap the microphone icon in Spotify’s search bar to start speaking. Alternatively, they can type their requests.
While Spotify has steadily introduced more AI-powered features in recent years, including AI-generated playlists and personalised podcast summaries, Talk to Spotify feels like one of its more practical additions. Instead of creating content, it focuses on making the app easier to navigate and helping users discover more about the music, podcasts and audiobooks they already enjoy.
This feature is currently rolling out in beta on iOS and Android. However, it’s currently limited to Premium users aged 18 and over in the US, Ireland and Sweden. Support is available in English.
