Apple’s next iPad mini could be shaping up to be its biggest update in years. While the move to an OLED display is expected to headline the refresh, the compact tablet will also receive a substantial performance boost.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the new iPad mini is on track to launch as early as October. Apple is reportedly preparing what could be the most significant overhaul to the device in around five years.
The biggest visual change is the switch from the current LCD display to OLED, bringing deeper blacks, stronger contrast and more vibrant colours to Apple’s smallest tablet. The technology first arrived on the iPhone with the iPhone X before making its way to the iPad Pro in 2024. If true, it would mark a notable upgrade for the mini lineup.
One feature that remains uncertain, however, is ProMotion. While one recent rumour claimed the new iPad mini will stick with a 60Hz refresh rate, that report hasn’t been backed up by other sources. Therefore, the possibility of a 120Hz display is open for now.
The display isn’t expected to be the only major upgrade, with Gurman also claiming the new model will deliver a “major processor leap”. Previous reports point to either the A19 Pro or A20 Pro replacing the current A17 Pro chip found in the 2024 iPad mini. Beyond faster performance, the newer silicon could also help support Apple’s latest AI-powered Siri features in iOS 27.
Apple is also testing a redesigned, water-resistant chassis, bringing the iPad mini closer to the durability offered by the iPhone. If it makes the final product, it would be particularly useful for anyone using the tablet while travelling.
Another rumoured change is a new vibration-based speaker system, which could allow Apple to remove the traditional speaker grilles altogether. Besides giving the tablet a cleaner design, the move could also make it easier to improve water resistance.
Pricing remains a mystery. Apple increased the price of the current iPad mini earlier this year from $499 to $599, and it’s possible the OLED model could carry an even higher premium. If the latest reports prove accurate, though, buyers may be getting considerably more than just a better screen.
