Switching from an iPhone to Android is about to become much less of a hassle.
With Android 17, Google has expanded its built-in migration tool to wirelessly transfer even more data from an iPhone. This removes another common pain point for anyone considering a move between mobile platforms.
The updated transfer experience is already rolling out to select Pixel devices and will also be available on Samsung’s newly announced Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8.
The biggest change is the range of data that can now be moved wirelessly during setup. Alongside photos, videos, contacts, messages and calendars, Android 17 can now also transfer Google Accounts, saved passwords, Wi-Fi credentials and eSIMs.
To use the feature, the iPhone must be running iOS 26.3 or later.
Android’s latest version significantly expands the data you can transfer from an iPhone without relying on third-party apps or complicated manual methods. Better yet, it builds the process directly into the Android setup experience, making it much easier to get a new device up and running while keeping much of your existing data intact.
Regulatory changes, rather than competition alone, are also driving these updates. Both Apple and Google introduced native cross-platform migration tools after the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) required major platforms to offer better data portability. Furthermore, this legislation also aimed to reduce barriers that keep users locked into a particular ecosystem.
The legislation also prompted both companies to support simplified eSIM transfers. This has been one of the more awkward parts of moving between operating systems in recent years.
For anyone who has delayed switching because of the hassle involved, Android 17 removes a few more obstacles. Passwords, wireless networks and eSIMs are often the kinds of details that take the longest to recreate on a new device. Therefore, having them transfer automatically should make the process feel much more seamless.
Whether that will be enough to tempt loyal iPhone users away is another question. However, for those already thinking about making the jump, Android 17 makes moving across considerably easier.
