The Galaxy Z Fold 8’s wider new design is proving popular

Samsung’s decision to give the Galaxy Z Fold 8 a wider cover display appears to be paying off. The company’s latest foldable is selling faster than expected during the pre-order period, with demand already putting pressure on stock in some markets.

Earlier this month, reports suggested Samsung expected the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 to be its best-selling book-style foldable and allocated around 2.8 million units for production. By comparison, it allocated 2 million units for the more expensive Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. Even with that larger supply, new leaks now claim the standard model is outperforming Samsung’s own sales forecasts.

According to leaker Lanzuk on Naver, pre-order demand for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 has exceeded expectations, creating allocation issues as Samsung works to distribute stock across different regions. Another post from Ice Universe on X also claims some markets, including South Korea, are at risk of running out of inventory before the pre-order period ends.

There are already signs that supply is tightening. Samsung’s web-exclusive Pistachio finish briefly disappeared from its online store before returning. However, customers are now seeing estimated delivery dates pushed back until October. Reports also suggest some carrier-exclusive colours could sell out by the second or third week of August.

Interestingly, there appears to be no similar shortage for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. The premium model is reportedly available in healthy quantities, suggesting buyers are gravitating towards the standard Fold 8 instead.

That may come down to Samsung’s redesigned form factor. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 introduces a noticeably wider cover display than previous generations, giving it a more conventional smartphone feel when closed. It also reduces the tall, narrow shape that has divided opinion on earlier Fold models. Combined with its slimmer profile, the new design seems to be resonating with buyers.

While these reports are based on supply-chain leaks rather than official sales figures, they suggest Samsung may have underestimated demand for its redesigned foldable. If stock shortages continue through the pre-order period, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 could end up being one of the company’s strongest-performing foldable launches to date.
