Astell&Kern has unveiled its latest portable music player, the PD5, bringing a new flagship feature set to its compact A&norma range.
The successor to the award-winning SR35 combines an eight-DAC audio architecture and up to 28 hours of battery life. In addition, there is a new adaptive sound feature that’s designed to optimise playback based on your surroundings.
The PD5 makes its debut at the Hong Kong AV Show, with availability and pricing set to be announced at a later date.
The standout feature is Astell&Kern’s new switchable Quad/Octa-DAC architecture. At its core are eight Cirrus Logic CS43198 DACs. This design allows users to switch between two listening modes depending on their priorities.
Quad-DAC mode is designed for efficiency, extending battery life to a claimed 28 hours of continuous playback. Meanwhile, Octa-DAC mode unlocks the player’s full audio performance for listeners who want the highest possible sound quality. When it’s time to recharge, support for USB PD 3.0 fast charging aims to cut charging time to around 2.5 hours.

Astell&Kern has also introduced a new feature called EnviroTune, which analyses ambient noise and automatically adjusts audio playback to better suit the listening environment. Whether you’re commuting, working in a busy office or listening somewhere quieter, the system is designed to optimise the sound without requiring manual adjustments.
The PD5 also supports bit-perfect playback up to 32-bit/384kHz PCM along with native DSD256. In addition, the octa-core processor runs a full Android operating system enables access to various music streaming services. Dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.3 covers wireless support, and there’s room for high-resolution codecs, a list that includes LDAC, LHDC and Qualcomm’s aptX HD.
Despite its feature set, Astell&Kern says the PD5 has been designed to remain compact enough for comfortable one-handed use. The aluminium chassis continues the premium styling the brand is known for.
Following its Hong Kong debut, the PD5 will then be showcased at the Shenzhen International Audio Show, before heading off to CanJam SoCal 2026 later in August.
