The Pixel 6 Pro is officially reaching the end of its software support, marking the end of an important chapter for Google’s smartphone lineup.
While the phone itself isn’t suddenly obsolete, its departure from Google’s support cycle is worth noting. This is because the Pixel 6 Pro helped establish the design, hardware and software philosophy that still defines Pixel phones today.
The Pixel 6 Pro was released with Google’s distinctive visor-style camera bar, a design that immediately gave the Pixel range a stronger visual identity. Five years later, that camera-bar approach remains part of Google’s smartphone design language.
But the Pixel 6 Pro’s significance goes beyond its appearance. It was the first Pixel powered by Google’s Tensor chip. This marked a major shift in how the company approached smartphone performance.
Rather than competing purely on benchmark numbers, Google used Tensor to prioritise features built around machine learning and everyday convenience. That included capabilities such as on-device transcription in Recorder, Live Translate, Call Screen and Voice Typing. The chip’s TPU helped power these experiences.
That software-first approach has become one of the defining characteristics of modern Pixel phones. Features such as Magic Eraser, Best Take, Pixel Studio and Google’s expanding AI tools have continued along the same path. These features put Google’s software capabilities at the centre of the Pixel experience.
The Pixel 6 Pro wasn’t perfect, either. Its launch came after several generations in which Google was still experimenting with the Pixel formula, including the Pixel 4‘s radar-based gestures and the Pixel 5‘s unusual bioresin construction. However, the Pixel 6 Pro felt like a more deliberate attempt to establish where the brand was going.
That’s arguably its biggest legacy.
Google now promises seven years of software support for newer Pixel devices, compared with five years for the Pixel 6 Pro. That longer commitment shows just how far the company has come since the Tensor-powered phone first established its current direction.
For anyone still using a Pixel 6 Pro, the end of support doesn’t mean the handset will stop working. Calls, messages and existing apps will continue to function. However, the phone has reached the end of its official software support window and will no longer receive major Android updates.
And while newer Pixels may be more capable, the Pixel 6 Pro deserves credit for helping Google find its smartphone identity. It wasn’t simply another Pixel generation. It was the foundation for the Pixel phones that followed.
