Technics is set to spin up a globally streamed DJ set from ¥ØUUK€¥UK1MATUK€¥UK1MATU (YOUSUKE YUKIMATSU) on August 18 to mark the 55th anniversary of the SL-1200.
The performance forms part of Technics’ build-up to the celebration of the SL-1200 Series, the direct-drive turntable line that debuted in 1972 and became the standard tool of DJ culture worldwide.
That legacy connects directly to ¥ØUUK€¥UK1MATUK€¥UK1MATU, an Osaka-born, Tokyo-based DJ who has played Coachella, Primavera, Lollapalooza and Berlin’s Berghain, and whose 2025 Boiler Room set passed 19 million views online.
His catalogue includes the compilation album “Midnight Is Comin’”, released through Singapore label Midnight Shift, which showcased a selector style built around Japanese artists rather than his own productions.
Technics filmed the new set on the Top Deck of Tokyo Tower, 250 metres above ground, in partnership with DOMMUNE, the Japanese live-streaming platform that has broadcast roughly 5,000 programmes since its founding in 2010.
Yousuke Yukimatsu performs an entirely vinyl DJ set for the occasion, a format choice that underlines Technics’ framing of its wider 55th anniversary campaign under the theme “The Legend Keeps Spinning”.
The set premieres free on YouTube at 6pm CEST (5pm BST) on August 18, streamed through Resident Advisor’s RA Live channel rather than through a dedicated Technics platform.
Resident Advisor operates as one of the most established electronic music platforms globally, and its reach gives the performance a distribution route aimed squarely at an audience already familiar with club and DJ culture.
The SL-1200’s place in DJ history
The SL-1200 Series traces its origins to the SP-10, the world’s first direct-drive turntable, before Technics refined that engineering into the SL-1200 that DJs later adopted as an industry standard worldwide.
Beyond its rotational stability and long-term durability, the SL-1200 helped pioneer scratching and other manual turntable techniques that shaped modern DJ performance decades before digital mixing equipment became widely available.
The SL-1200 line has shipped more than 3.5 million units since Technics introduced the series in 1972, a scale that few turntable ranges in DJ or audiophile equipment have matched across five decades of use.
Technics itself dates back to 1965, when the brand launched with the Technics 1 speaker before expanding into amplifiers, tuners and the direct-drive turntables that later defined club and DJ culture globally.
DOMMUNE brings its own scale to the collaboration, since the platform has streamed more than 10,000 hours of content across roughly 5,000 programmes and reached a cumulative audience above 200 million viewers over 15 years.
Technics has not confirmed further programming beyond the August 18 premiere, though the collaboration with DOMMUNE and Resident Advisor points to additional activity as the SL-1200’s 55th anniversary year in 2027 approaches.
